TOM LEA (1907-2001). American Artist, Illustrator, and Writer. Texas legend, Lea, is nationally recognized for his art and books that illustrated the American Southwest. Internationally known for his paintings, writing and illustrations, he studied art under muralist john Norton at the Chicago Art Institute (1924-26). He became a muralist and illustrator, a WW II correspondant for Life Magazine. Sadly he lost his sight in 1998. His painting, RIO GRANDE, hung in the oval office of the White House.

Limited, Autographed, First Edition #8/100; signed and noted by the author Tom Lea At El Paso del Norte Day of San Miguel Anno di 1964; 244 pages exquisitely illustrated by the author in black and white, full color frontispiece, marbled end papers, gilt top, others deckled: 6.5″x9.25″ medium 8vo. VG/RARE; Hardcover in original slipcase; full imported crushed brown Morrocan leather with gilt title on ribbed spine; embossed stamping on face; decorated gilt around edges of end papers; silk ribbon; great tight clean crisp copy, slight traces of damp staining (foxing) noted on a few of the last pages.

The story is of The New Spain and the most accomplished horseman, Don Vito Cantu, and his knowledge and understanding of the Ibarra horses: a SUPERB collector’s item of the Americas, Mexico, Horses! Also included is Tom Lea’s Signed and dated 1964, Lithograph entitled Toribio, dated 1964 housed in wrappers, slight foxing. A Typed Letter Signed, by Tom Lea boldly in DARK pencil to an Atlanta book seller on Lea’s letterhead: 2401 Savannah Street EL Paso Texas, Please send Volume I only of THE KING RANCH set, with return postage, and I will supply the autograph.
