PAUL ROBESON (1898-1976). American Actor and football All-American. Great American Bass gave concerts in the United States, Russia, and throughout Europe. Robeson was a two-year All-American in football, valedictorian, and a Phi Beta Kappa at a time when few African-Americans even attended college. He graduated from Columbia University with a degree in law, but turned to singing and acting. He appeared internationally in plays and films, on concert stages, and on recordings. His most famous stage role was in Othello, but he was especially known for his renditions of black spirituals.
