Regarding the Woman’s Journal

UCY STONE (1818-1893). Abolitionist, Suffragist, Author, and Editor. In 1847 she was the first Massachusetts woman to have earned a college degree. Appointed lecturer for the Anti-Slavery Society, she was a leader in calling a women’s rights convention in Massachusetts (1850). Her speech there won over Susan B. Anthony to the cause. Stone founded the American Woman Suffrage Association (1869) and the Woman’s Journal (1870). She united with the Stanton-Anthony group to form the National American Woman Suffrage Association. In keeping with her independent spirit, she was the first person in New England to be cremated!

Autograph Letter Signed, one page, Dorchester, August 4, (1893). Stone writes: “Dear Hattie, I have acknowledged this check and will tell Mrs. Wilde that I am to ‘attend to’ reply to her pleasant note for which I thank her. As always, Lucy Stone”. Notation on the verso in another hand: “For Woman’s Journal fund from Eleanor G. May for August 1893.”
