1891 Autograph Letter Signed

JAMES RUSSELL LOWELL (1819 – 1891) Poet, Critic, Satirist, Journalist, Diplomat, Abolitionist. He was a member of the Fireside Poets. In 1846, he was a correspondent of the London Daily News. In 1877, he was appointed by President Hayes to be minister to the court of Spain.

The one page, 12mo, ALS is on his watermarked & folded letterhead, Elmwood, Cambridge (printed in red) dated 8th Jan. 1891. On the verso of the fold are previous attachment marks which have no effect on the item. The letter reads:

Dear Sir, The vernacle you quote was made (I am pretty sure) in an Extemporaneous Colloquy with a Committee of the U.S. Senate. It was no doubt printed among the Senate documents, but I have no copy of it. I think the date was 1886 – possibly 1887. Faithfully yours, J. R. Lowell J. P. Hamby, Esq.
