JAMES EARL RAY (1928-1998). Convicted assassin of Civil Rights Leader, Martin Luther King. Ray was an escaped convict who had broken out of the Missouri State Penitentiary a year prior to King’s murder. He was captured at London’s Heathrow Airport trying to flee the UK after King’s death & extradited to Tennessee where he was charged with King’s murder. Ray confessed, later recanting. Yet he was sentenced to 99 years in prison. Ray took a guilty plea (at the advice of his attorney, Percy Foreman) to avoid the death penalty. James Earl Ray died in prison of kidney failure, arguing to the end that he was NOT King’s assassin!
A DOUBLE SIGNED ALS on a yellow lined legal pad dated 4-22-83, adding “James Ray-65477″ & his address in the Nashville Penitentiary in black ink. Ray writes a Reverend William Ward a thank you note for “…the last letter, and also need the enclosed envelope & stamp” Signing, “Sincerely: J.Ray” in large bold script. $195.00
