HORACE GREELEY (1811–1872). American Editor of The New York Tribune, a founder of the Republican Party, Reformer and Politician. In his New York Tribune, America’s most influential newspaper, 1840-1870, Greeley promoted the Whig and Republican parties, as well as antislavery and a host of reforms. He also crusaded against the corruption of Ulysses S. Grant’s Republican administration. A presidential candidate of a new Liberal Republican Party in 1872, he lost in a landslide, despite having the additional support of the Democratic Party.
